About running an online dating agency
Online dating agencies act as an intermediary
between individuals looking to meet others to form personal relationships
via a website. Most online dating agencies are aimed at singles
looking to meet other singles, allowing clients to post details
of themselves and the type of person they would like to meet on
the website. Some dating agencies targeting more specific groups
e.g. people of a particular religion, age group or sexual orientation.
Agencies vary in the way they charge for their services. Most charge
some sort of fee: some offer free registration of a client's details
but charge for introductions to other registered members, some charge
for registration but introductions are free, some allow women to
register for free but charge men etc.
Online dating agences need to be aware of
and comply with their obligations as ecommerce traders. The obligations
imposed by the Data Protection Act 1998 are particularly important.
There are several business structures appropriate
to running a dating agency, each with its own advantages and disadvantages.
The way you choose to run your business will affect many aspects;
the tax and national insurance due, the records and accounts that
are required, financial liabilities, opportunities to raise finance
and the way management decisions are made. See our section on Business
structures for more information.
